The unique exhaust design coupled with the frame dampening allows it to run at a comfortable 69 decibels, that's quiet enough to hold a conversation next to it without raising your voice. Suitable for campgrounds and public parks. Another added feature is its low oil protection system which will automatically shut the generator off to protect it from any damage should it run out of oil. Ordered 12/16/2010 - received 12/22/2010 - 7 days FedEx standard shipping. Packaging was superb! and not a scratch anywhere. Flipping the unit upside down onto the styrofoam packing for un-pack and wheels/feet assembly works well, since no fluids are involved. I chose to disconnect and remove the battery, bring it indoors, and allow it to warm to room temp overnight. First impressions regarding overall fit and finish were excellent. Color and attention to detail are there, and, like the Chinese or not, it's a slick little unit!

Oil-fill, air filter check, and fueling led to that throaty VAROOM! when I turned the key. VERY re-assuring! Engine break-in and generator check went well, but verify your wattages via the data plate on each item. The list provided is only an estimate. Cautionary tale: microwave cooking wattage is NOT the same as power consumption wattage/amperage. And yes, the circuit breakers DO work. Only a slight change in engine modulation occurs in response to wattage demands.

Completion of the first run (2 sessions of: 2-/2 hours; 2 day break; then 5 hours straight,) rendered 7 hours 20 minutes on 1.94 gallons of premium gas. First session loads were 1000-1300W per each 120v outlet (iron & coffee pot,) second session was 500-1000W per each, with lamps, TV, hair dryer, wood stove blower, full-size fridge, and full-size deep-freeze cycling. Following the 7 hour test, with fuel exhausted, I immediately changed the oil - brown? yes, but NO metal filings! A long slender funnel is needed for no-mess oil filling. A painter's-roller-pan slips right under the frame for oil-draining-catch, and still another, small, short funnel can be held to the oil drain hole to re-direct oil into the pan. Presto-change-o, no spills! With a full fuel tank, reasonable loads, and continuous running, I hope for 14 hours on 4 gallons. We'll see.

This is a capable, stout & sturdy, affordable, relatively quiet (lawn-mower-like) machine, excellent for moderate home-emergency and utility/RV/camping electrical needs. It won't power EVERYTHING in the house at once, but then, it gets great fuel mileage. In a REAL emergency, fuel availability could be a major issue, while still powering the essentials.

It is much smaller in real life than it seems in the website pictures. Only 24 wide at the wheels, and 25 long, the unit tucks away nicely in the garage, with the optional cover, awaiting the power emergency we hope never comes. Very pleased, excellent tech-support, unmatched value for the features, capacity, and price. EXXXCELLENT!

power to spare

I bought this for a friend, and it seems to be a good one. The wheel kit is a good one, shipping was a little rough, it came upside down and the container was tough shape. It really starts easy. The battery came charged.

Great Product and Performance

I live in Western Washington state and up in the mountains. The UPS delivered the generator right to my door (and I live 2 miles from the nearest public road), and immediately opened it. Everything was in excellent shape, no damage whatsoever. After removing the safety shipping stuff, I lugged it up uphill to my upper shed (whew!)which contains my water system (I never used the wheel kit because it is permanently mounted on the large piece of foam that came in the box. It was perfect in size and thickness.

Next, I put the oil in and overfilled it and paid the price. It really messed up my wooden floor because I had to pull the funnel as it still had oil in it. I used a bulb to suck the excess oil out of the generator and next filled it it with gas. I also had to provide a 12 of #10 wire from the neg side of the battery to the grounded frame. I added terminal lugs on both ends. That worked great. Make sure you also ground the generator to a close by main ground rod.

I didn't have to charge the battery and it started right up after choking it. It is very quiet for its size. I then dug a 40' ditch to my house and installed four #8 wires through 3/4 PVC conduit to an LB conduit to my main panel. Before that though, I went into the house and removed the main panel cover, turned off the 200A breaker and punched an existing 3/4 knockout in the rear of the panel to the outside of the house and then installed the LB PVC and nipple. Then I installed a 30amp breaker with a lockout device (so you dont kill someone on the other end of the power pole). Leave the main 200A breaker off until the generator is off and the new 30a breaker locked out).

Next, I did a dry run after turning off the breakers I didn't want that I knew would overload the generator (heat, HW tank, etc.). I then turned on the generator, came back into the house and turned on the new 30A breaker and bingo all was well. It was just as though the power was never off.

All my lighting is fluorescent bulbs, so that leaves much more power for the freezer, frig, TV, and the fan for my propane stove (We cook with propane).

I forgot to mention, that you need to purchase the generator power cord and it is expensive. I bought a plug and 4 wire cable and made my own, and it still cost$50. I did that so I could hook the other end into a junction box. However, after all was said and done, I would highly recommend this generator for anyone with basic power needs when a storm hits. The cost to run it for 10 hours is about $12. thats why I didn't purchase a larger one.

Great value for the money

So far I am delighted with this XP4400E generator. It arrived via FEDEX fine, packing is superb, and assembly of wheel kit and handles was very straiaght forward. I did charge the battery overnight before adding oil and preparing unit to start. It started immediately and ran smooth right out of the box. I really do like the electric start feature as my wife can start generator with no problems. Unit is not too loud and is easily moved about on the wheels. Only tested so far by running a vacuum cleaner. I am planning to have transfer switch wired into our breaker panelmainly to run well pump, pellet stove and a few lights. The included instruction manual is quite good and includes detailed parts listing.

Great piece of Equipment

I bought this to run an air conditioner on a travel trailer and it worked great. The gas consumption was acceptable also. It actually powered the air conditioner, a laptop and a microwave all at one time. A great buy for the price.

Just another customer review as of spring 2010

I think all the other customer reviews I have read as of today (29 I think), have helped me in my decision, so thank you.

My objective where I live on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee is just to have an emergency backup to keep my refrigerator and freezer going when public electricity goes out. Now not too long ago, we went 8 days without public electricity because of weather problems. Now, since I have buried the wires about 1000 feet from the public highway hookup, my guess is that 8 days may get reduced to like 2 days or less.

In the meantime up here I have a wood stove and hydraulic ram (1879 design) so I don't think I will starve or freeze to death when times get hard.

To continue, I used to be in the Marines in the deserts of like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. I have used both gasoline and diseal generators, much to my satisfaction. Hence, which way to go in 2010 on the Cumberland Plateau.

This piece of gear is OK. It works out of the box, kinda. My only problem was that the negative battery connection was not made at the factory, and I had to figure it out and connect it, which I did just fine (after a few minutes of aggrevation). In the meantime, I had to start it with the pull-starter, and that worked just fine. After all, one must reherse all this if given the time.

I did check it out to make sure it makes electricity, like to power my leaf blower, as an example, and it did just fine. I did have to make sure to turn the circuit breaker on, by the way. That is a good problem, also.

The box arrived via UPS in very good condition. I was especially impressed with all the foam packing materials, vice styrofoam packing materials we more usually see. And all the directions sure helped, too. Somebody did a good job. In fact, in my opinion, the foam packing was as good on better than what I would get out of ammo boxes, for example, to use as padding in Humvees back in my time.

Last, in my situation, I used to have to maintain two houses, one for me and one for my caretakers. In their case, and they are now gone, I actually bought and hooked up a transfer box' to give them priority over me. As part of this whole hookup, I included a cable to make all this happen, and you know what, this widget has the proper connection to keep this going. Now I have not reheresed this yet.

By the way, a transfer box is just a widget to protect the generator from the public electricity when it comes back on. It is kind of a switch, so to speak.

Nice Machine for the money

I received this unit as described. Assembly was simple and straight forward. Added fluids and turned the key. After a few cranks it fired right up. I plugged in my double halogen work lights to test it and they worked. Plugged in a regular incandesant drp light and it worked ok. Had not had the opportunity to test this unit with a heavy load but plan to do this one evening. I must say the machine was packaged properly for a cross country trip. They secured engine and generator head with brackets and wood. This was a smart idea.

very pleased, quality product

The generator was delivered sooner than anticipated and was well packaged. Some minor assembly was required. The Generator is a fine product and is definitely the best deal for the money spent. I used it during the latest snow storm when my power was out for about 12 hours. The generator easily powered my fireplace blower, entire entertainment center, 1500 watt radiator heater, several lights, and (refrigerator/microwave/toaster-alternately) all at the same time with no problems. It also adjusts its fuel consumption based on the current draw used so it used much less gas than its max rating. (about 1.5 gal in 3 and 1/2 hours) its rated for 8 hours on 4 gals. Having compared this generator to several others available at local retailers it is by far a superior product and I highly recommend it . Thanks for a great product at a great price!

Great unit for the money

Item was delivered exactly as described, and in perfect condition with the exception of a small amount of surface rust on the underside front support bar. Some light brushing and a few srokes of Rustoleum paint made everything fine.(not unusual for any steel unit, and I have had many) Performance of the unit was impressive, not noisy and all outputs were fine. Easy starting, no smoking even with choke on. Very easy to move around with the large wheels. Change engine oil after 2 hrs run as you should with any new small engine. I power my whole house with the exception of central air and the stove, which in an emergency I do not care about. Added bonus: Generator Facory Outlet knows how to treat customers.
